WHY VISIT KIBALE
Uganda’s primate capital and forest safari hub
Kibale Forest National Park protects a beautiful mid-altitude rainforest near Fort Portal in western Uganda. It is best known for chimpanzee trekking, but the forest is also home to a remarkable concentration of primates, colourful birds, butterflies and quiet trails beneath a high tropical canopy.
The main experience starts at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre, where Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers lead small groups into the forest to track habituated chimpanzee communities. The encounter is energetic and immersive: calls echo through the trees, branches shake above you, and the forest feels alive long before the chimpanzees come into view.
Kibale also works beautifully within a broader Uganda circuit. Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, crater lakes, tea landscapes and easy links to Queen Elizabeth National Park make it one of the most rewarding places to slow down between savannah and gorilla destinations.
Ganyana tip: Stay at least two nights if you can. One night can work for a quick chimp trek, but two or three nights allow better pacing, Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, crater lakes and a smoother route into Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi.

Kibale can be visited throughout the year. The drier months from June to September and December to February are often preferred for forest trails, though chimpanzees are present year-round and wet seasons can be excellent for lush scenery and birding.
