Fishing in Uganda; one of the most beautiful countries in Africa. It’s beauty doesn’t only reside in the fantastic scenery but also in its incredible bodies of water.

Situated on the elevated basin which rises between the Eastern and the western branches of the Great Rift Valley, most of Uganda is well watered and fertile with almost 25% of the country’s surface being covered by water.

Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, is shared by Uganda with Tanzania and Kenya. Lakes Albert, Edward and George on the Congolese border as well as the marshy and ill defined Lake Kyoga in the centre of the country all offer great sites for fishing trips.

The Nile also offers opportunities for fishing at various points. In few places can you experience the quality of fishing that you can in Uganda where you can appreciate the beautiful, unpolluted and naturally gifted surroundings at the cradle of serenity.

Over 350 fish species have been recorded in Uganda, but it’s primarily the giant Nile perch and Tilapia that have support the sport fishing tourist income. You can also find catfish, Tiger fish, Barbel, Ferocious fighter, Rastrineobola, Lung fish, Protopterus among many other that are of interest.

The lake is the second biggest water body in the world and inhabitants lots of different types of fish that include Nile Perch and tilapia among others.

Fishing in Lake Mburo National Park

This national park has got 5 lakes inside and this makes it a total of over 12 lakes in the general area of the park. Lake Mburo is also the largest of all and the fisher men come to this lake to fish as well as the visitors to Lake Mburo can carry out some fishing and then later arrange to have the fish well prepared at the lodge where they are staying. There are also 6 species of fish that are found here and tilapia being the main specie of choice. Sport fishing can also be carried out since we can obtain a license or you. We can also arrange the fishing gear and also be in place when you arrive in the park as you embark on your lake fishing experience. The main designated fishing spots are at Mazinga, and it’s safe along Lake Mburo and you don’t have to worry about the hippos and crocodiles.

Fishing in Murchison Falls can be done anytime of the year and the large catfish and Nile perch can be caught all year round. Anglers say that best catches are seen early in the morning and late in the day. Though best results of fish are when the water level is low since the water is clearer, and that is during the dry and shadow season from Mid-January to Early-April. Also it is said that fish feed more when weather conditions vary dramatically especially at the start of the rains.

Sport fishing in Murchison falls national park is mainly done at the foot hills of the falls. Fishing is either from the rocks on the bank of the river or the lower downstream with in the pools from the boat. The access to the fishing spots is also either by boat from the downstream or by walking down the gorge towards the river from the top of the falls. This steep climb back up and many people also tend to go fishing well equipped for the day in order to avoid hiking up in the heat of the day.

Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls in Eastern Uganda in the district of Kapchorwa, northeast of Sironko and Mbale. The waterfalls lie on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park near the Kenyan border.
