Enswaswa, commonly known in English as the Nile monitor lizard, is an important part of Buganda’s cultural heritage. Traditionally, its strong skin was used to make musical instruments such as the Engalabi, a long traditional drum, and the Endongo, a traditional Baganda string instrument. These instruments are important in traditional music, ceremonies and cultural performances.
Beyond its cultural value, the Nile monitor is also an important part of Uganda’s natural environment. It lives around rivers, lakes and wetlands, where it helps maintain the ecological balance as a predator and scavenger. Protecting Enswaswa therefore helps preserve both Buganda’s cultural heritage and Uganda’s wildlife heritage.
