  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park sectors.
July 8, 2026

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is divided into four gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector has its own park headquarters, habituated gorilla families, and unique trekking routes. When visitors purchase a gorilla trekking permit, it is issued for a specific sector, and they must begin their trek from the corresponding briefing point. Although all four sectors offer the opportunity to see mountain gorillas, they differ in accessibility, terrain, accommodation options, and overall visitor experience.

Buhoma Sector, located in the northern part of the park, is the oldest and most popular sector, where gorilla tourism in Uganda first began. It is easily accessible from Queen Elizabeth National Park and offers a wide range of accommodation, from budget to luxury lodges. Ruhija Sector, situated in the east, is known for its cool climate, stunning mountain scenery, and exceptional birdwatching, making it a favorite destination for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers.

In the southern part of the park lies Rushaga Sector, which has the highest number of habituated gorilla families and is the only sector that offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, allowing visitors to spend up to four hours with gorillas instead of the standard one hour. This sector is home to popular lodges such as Gorilla Valley Lodge and provides numerous accommodation choices for different budgets.

Nkuringo Sector, found in the southwestern part of Bwindi, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and more challenging hiking trails. It is ideal for adventurous travelers who enjoy physically demanding treks and spectacular views of the Virunga Mountains. Together, the four sectors provide diverse gorilla trekking experiences, ensuring that every visitor can enjoy one of Uganda’s most remarkable wildlife adventures while contributing to the conservation of the endangered mountain gorilla
