WHY VISIT SEMLIKI
Uganda’s wild lowland forest on the Congo edge
Semliki National Park sits in the Albertine Rift near Bundibugyo, below the northern Rwenzori Mountains and close to the Democratic Republic of Congo border. It protects one of East Africa’s rare lowland tropical forests, connected in character to the wider Ituri Forest system.
This is not the busy, classic savannah safari stop. Semliki is for travellers who enjoy quieter nature, unusual birdlife, forest trails, hot springs and the feeling of reaching a wilder corner of western Uganda.
The signature visit is Sempaya, where male and female hot springs steam through a mineral-rich forest setting. Birders can add forest trails, Semliki River edges and nearby Lake Albert/Toro-Semliki extensions for shoebill and waterbird possibilities.

Best time to visit
Semliki can be visited throughout the year, but the drier months from June to September and December to February often make forest trails and road travel easier. Rain is always possible in this lowland forest environment.

Getting there
